   What is Our Discovery Island?

Our Discovery Island is a course for children learning English, published by Pearson. There are six islands in the course, teaching six different levels of English. Each island has a different adventure, with the same fun characters you find in the online game, and in the books and DVDs.

   What is Islands?

Islands is a seven-level course for children learning English as a foreign language, published by Pearson.  Each level has a Digital Activity Book, and Levels 1 to 6 have an online game. Each level is based on a different Island, and each Island has a different adventure, with the same fun characters you find in the online game, and in the books and DVDs.

   Our Discovery Island: How do I register?

Find the access code in your Our Discovery Island book. Ask your teacher for your Class ID. Go to www.ourdiscoveryisland.com. Click on New User. Make a character for your game. Then type in your details and access code. Make up a password that you can remember easily. Write it down somewhere safe! Type in your parents’ e-mail address. If you haven’t got an e-mail address, ask your teacher if you can use a class e-mail address. You can type in your Class ID too.

   When will my registration expire?

Your student account will expire after 21 months. A teacher account will expire after 36 months.

   Can I register for the Islands online game?

You can register for the game if you are using Level 1 to level 6. There is no online game for Starter Level, but there is a Digital Activity Book (see How do I register for the Digital Activity Book below).

   Where is my game access code?

It is inside the front cover of your Islands Pupil’s Book, and it gives you access to the online game.  Scratch the silver off to see it. It is a long string of letters and numbers. You can use the code only once.

   How do I play the game?

You can play the game after you register. You will see a map of the Island in the game, and a picture of the Activity Book. Click on the map to start playing.

   How do I register for the Digital Activity Book

Levels 1-6

You must register for the game first. Log in to Islands, then enter the Activity Book access code under the picture of the Activity Book and click ‘Go’. You can find the access code in your Islands Activity Book.

Starter

Find the access code in your Islands Activity Book. Go to www.islands.pearson.com. Enter your access code and click on New User. You do not need to fill in the user name and password here if you are a new user.  Type in your details. Make up a user name and  password that you can remember easily. Write them down somewhere safe! Type in your parents’ e-mail address. If you haven’t got an e-mail address, ask your teacher if you can use a class e-mail address.

   How do I make a character?

Click on New User.  Choose the boy or girl picture and click on it. You can change the character you get. You can change it all, or you can change some bits e.g. the mouth, the hair, the clothes. Your character has a name. It’s not the same as your user name.

   Can I change my character later?

Yes, you can copy other characters in the game with the Costumizer . It’s on the top right of the game. Click on the Costumizer icon, then click on the character you want to copy.

   What is my user name?

You can make up a name. You will need it to log on to the game. You can’t have the same user name as anyone else. Your user name is not the same as your character’s name. Write it down somewhere safe!

   Can I change my user name?

No, you can’t change your user name.

   What is the password for?

You will use the password to log on to your game. Choose a password that you can remember easily. It must have at least six letters or numbers, but it must not have any spaces or symbols. Write a hint that will help you remember your password.

   Can I change my password later?

   What is the aim of the game?

Each island has an adventure game. You must help the other characters with some tasks to complete the adventure. There are eight scenes in each adventure. When you have completed a scene, you will get a silver star, and you can move to the next scene.

   How do I play the game?

Click on the map or the arrow to start the game. Click on people to talk to them. They will tell you what to do. Move your character with your mouse or touchpad. Your character can walk, run and jump on to things. Click on objects or run into them to collect or catch them.

   How do I get a silver star?

You get a silver star when you complete the main tasks for a scene. Click on characters to find out what you have to do.

   How do I get a gold star?

You get a gold star when you complete the main tasks, collect all the things, and play the extra mini-games.

   How do I find the extra mini-games?

Look for the little picture clues in your Our Discovery Island book. There’s one clue in each unit. Find the same picture in the game, and click on it. It will take you to an extra mini-game.

   How do I get extra things?

Sometimes when you complete a main task or an extra mini-game, one of the characters will give you something. You can find these items in your backpack . It’s on the top right of the game.

   Can I talk to other players in the game?

You can communicate with other players in the chatroom. The chatroom is in the first scene of the game. You can choose questions to ask, and answers to give. You can’t talk directly to other players.

   How do I talk to other players?

Visit the chatroom to communicate with other players.  Click on another character. You can CHAT, or play a GAME.

   How do I play the multiplayer games?

Go to the chatroom. Click on another character. Click on GAME,then choose a game.

   What is my Report card?

Your Report card is a record of your progress in the game. It shows you how many gold and silver stars you have. You can see it by clicking on the star on the top right of the game.

   What is the Picture Dictionary for?

The Picture Dictionary can help you with new words. It can show you what some words mean. Use it when you find a new word that you don’t understand, or use it to learn new words to help you with the extra mini-games. You can find it in your backpack . It’s on the top right of the game.

   When I finish, can I play Our Discovery Island again?

Yes, you can. First finish all the scenes. A RESET button will appear on your Report card.  Click on RESET, and you will go back to the start of the game. Your stars and your backpack will be reset. You can win stars and collect things again.

   What are the system requirements for playing the game?

You will need a computer with internet access and Adobe Flash Player.

   I’m a parent. Can I view my child’s progress in the game?

You will need your child’s login details. We sent you an e-mail with these details when your child registered on the game. Go to www.ourdiscoveryisland.com/parents and log in using your child’s user name and password. You can see which activities your child has completed. Adventures are the main tasks for practising English, and Supplementary activities are extra practice activities.

   I’m a teacher. How do I register on the Progress Review System (PRS)?

First use the access code in your Our Discovery Island teacher’s book (not the student’s book) to register as a player on Our Discovery Island. Then you can click on the link which will take you to the PRS. You must use the same user name and password to log in. You can also go directly to the PRS by using the following URL: www.ourdiscoveryisland.com/teachers.

   Can I edit my profile?

Yes, you can reset your password, or change your e-mail address by clicking on Edit profile (on the Overview screen) in the Progress Review System, or by clicking on Edit details after you log in to Our Discovery Island.

   I’m teaching more than one level of Islands. Do I have to create a new user name and password for each level?

No, if you have already registered for one level of Islands, you can log into that account. When you log in, you will see Enter another access code. You can enter more access codes for the other levels then click on Go. You will see separate buttons for the levels. Click on the name of the Island you want to play on.

   The Progress Review System (PRS) is asking me for a user name and password.

Your login details for the PRS are the same as your login details for the game and Active Teach. Use the password for the same level.

   Some students don’t have a home e-mail address. Can they register?

All users must have an e-mail address. It is a good idea for the teacher to set up a class e-mail address for each class if some students don’t have a home e-mail address. Then you can help those students if they forget their login details.

   What does the Progress Review System (PRS) do?

You can organise your students by class. The PRS shows you (1) how far each student has progressed in the game; (2) the time each student has spent on the game so far.  You can also see a Guide to the game showing the language aims of each scene, and how to progress through the tasks.

   I’m teaching more than one level of Our Discovery Island, do I have to create a separate PRS for each level?

No, you can have one PRS for all your classes at any level, working on any Island. You must use the same user name and password to log in. It is a good idea to put the level in the Class name or Class description so you can easily identify each group.

   What is a Class ID?

The Class ID is an auto-generated number which identifies your class in the Progress Review System. Give this number to your Class as their Class ID. You can choose any name for your class. It is a good idea to put the level or island name in the class name.

   How do I set up a class on the Progress Review System?

Click on the Add class button (on the Overview screen). Write a name for this class, and a description. Click Save. A Class ID will appear on the Overview screen. Give this Class ID to your students in that class.

   Can I create more than one class?

Yes, you can create as many different classes as you need.

   Can I have students studying different levels in the same class?

Yes, you can. You will see the students in groups with the name of their Island.

   Can I change the class name or class description?

Yes, click on the pencil icon .

   Can I delete a class?

Yes, click on the delete icon .

   Can I change the Class ID?

No, this can’t be changed.

   Can I move students from one class to another?

Yes. Give the students their new Class ID and ask them to change their Class ID via the Edit details button. When the students have changed their Class ID, they will appear in the new class on the PRS.

   Can I reset a student’s password?

On the Class View screen, select the pencil icon next to the name of the student whose password you want to change. You can then type in a new password.

   How do I see the progress of my class?

Click on the class name on the Overview screen. The Class view screen shows how far each student has progressed, and whether they have completed all the tasks.  A silver star shows that they have completed the main tasks (Adventures). A gold star shows that they have completed the mini-games and additional materials (Supplementary activities) as well. It also shows the total time they have spent on the game.

   Can I look at the progress of individual students?

Yes, you can click on a student’s name (on the Class view screen) to see their progress.

   Can I look at the progress of a group of students?

Yes, click on the check boxes beside the names of the students you want to compare, then click on Compare selected. This shows the scenes (Adventures) each student has completed, and the mini-games (Supplementary activities), as well as the time spent on the game.

   What are the Learning Objectives in the game?

The target vocabulary and language structures are identified for each scene in each level of the game. These can be viewed in the Game Guide.
